I'll start a piece with a finished product in mind, knowing to be flexible. Ultimately the wood determines the shape which inspires me to take chances.
After 25 years in the elementary school classroom, I retired to become a full-time artist. Each day in my Colorado studio is a learning opportunity. And like the hundreds of children I taught over the years, each piece of wood has its own characteristics, challenges, and natural beauty.
Inside Out
I spend a lot of time rescuing wood. Urban trees are a big source. The removal can be due to disease, storm damage, urban growth or an incident. Sentimental landowners have commissioned many pieces from trees they have had to let go. Post-consumer recycled wood is another sustainable source. Broken furniture or scraps from crafters and builders destined for the landfill are welcomed materials. Whether urban tree or recycled wood, transforming the shape and design for a second life is artistically compelling.
